The Senate has confirmed 28 non-career nominees and 56 career-nominees as Nigerian ambassadors. Speaking at the plenary session yesterday, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Mathew Nwagwu, said three out of the 87 nominees that appeared for the screening failed.

Nwagwu, who gave the names of those that failed the screening as Abubakar Bunu (Zamfara), Sifawu Momoh (Edo) and Mazi Okafor Ojih (Ebonyi), added that a non-career nominee from Anambra State, Bianca Ojukwu, did not appear for screening.

“Although Bunu demonstrated fair knowledge of Nigerian issues, his knowledge of foreign relations, diplomacy and global affairs was not impressive. Momoh was nervous in her response to issues asked. She is not good in foreign relations, diplomacy or general questions. We are convinced that she is not a good material for ambassadorial appointment, while Ojih’s performance was below average,” Nwagwu said.

Those confirmed as non-career ambassadors are Ojo Maduekwe (Abia), James Barka (Adamawa) Asam Asam (Akwa Ibom), Okeke Chukwuemeka (Anambra), Eric Aworahbi (Bayelsa),  Chive Kaave (Benue), Dauda Danladi (Borno), Katherine Okon (Cross River), Victorial Bosede Onipede (Ekiti), Fidelia Njeze (Enugu), Haruna Garba (Gombe),  Nonye Rajis-Okpara (Imo), Adamu Babangida Ibrahim (Katsina), Tukur Mani (Katsina), Biodun Olorunfemi (Kogi), Olatokumboh Kamson, (Lagos), Sam Jimba (Nasarawa), Cornelius Oluwateru (Ondo), Roland Omowa (Ondo), Akinyemi Faroubi (Osun), Taofeek Arapaja (Oyo), Matilda Kwashi, (Plateau), Abdalah Wali (Sokoto), Lawan Guba (Yobe),  Esther Audu (FCT), among others.

Senate President David Mark directed the committee to conduct another screening within a week, for the three nominees that failed the first one.

This, according to him, is in view of the sensitive nature of the assignments involved.

Some of the confirmed career ambassadors include: G.O. Ehiobuche (Abia), Hamman Joda (Adamawa), M. Gereng-Sen (Adamawa), .S.B. Bassey (Akwa Ibom), C.N. Okafor (Anambra), D.G. Bala (Bauchi), M.S. Yunusa (Bauchi), P.O. Ogidi-Oke (Bayelsa), M. Adoli (Benue), I.V. Ogah (Benue), U. Sarki (Borno), G.A. Zakari (Borno), B. E. Achibong (Cross River), N.C. Onianwa (Delta) and F.
