A 200 level student of the Department of
Political Science, Lagos State University, Ojo, Emeka Maduka, died two
weeks ago after being stabbed by a rival cult member at the Iba New Site
Estate, Ojo.
The incident reportedly happened on July 17,
2011 at about 5 pm. Maduka’s neighbours told CRIME DIGEST on the
condition of anonymity that the Iba New Site Estate was a haven for
several rival cult groups.
“Maduka lived at Obawole Street
with some of his fellow students and other cult members. I knew him to
be a cultist; he was a member of the Vikings cult group,” one of his
neighbours said.
Trouble began for Maduka when he went
drinking at a local pub with some friends. “The pub was a few streets
away from Obawole Street. I can’t really say how it started, but Maduka
got into an argument with a girl there and she happened to be the lover
of a guy named Aliha. He is one of the leaders of the Eiye cult group.
“After
a while, the argument degenerated into a quarrel and Maduka started
exchanging words with the girl. Right there, the girl picked up her
phone and called Aliha,” the source said.
Aliha, who was
in a nearby dispensary, allegedly hurried away as soon as he got the
call. By then, Maduka had left with his friends. “Aliha followed Maduka
to his house and challenged him. In a matter of minutes, they started
fighting. Those who were around them at the time, separated them and
took Maduka to a chemist because he had sustained some injuries to his
face,” the source said.
After he had been treated, some of
Maduka’s friends left. Unknown to those who went back to his house with
him, Maduka had collected a bottle from his room and put it in his
pocket after smashing it. A source who was present at the scene added,
“Maduka came out of his house and to everyone’s surprise, went after
Aliha where he stood with his friends. He took the bottle out of his
pocket and started fighting Aliha and his friends with it. Unfortunately
for him, he was outnumbered. They got the bottle and stabbed him twice;
on both sides of the neck.”
Maduka was immediately taken
to a nearby clinic, but was unable to get medical attention. “Aliha knew
that Maduka would be taken there so he was already there waiting with
his group when Maduka’s friends brought him. They warned everyone in the
clinic not to treat Maduka and even chased the doctor on duty out of
the hospital. That was how he gave up the ghost,” the source said.
Presently,
Aliha and two other members of his gang involved in the murder, Hamza
and Abass, are on the run. “They had already escaped before the police
got here, although I’m certain that if the police really want to
prosecute Aliha, they can get him. A week after that incident, I went
partying at a club in Ikotun and I met Aliha there with his friends.
Even Maduka’s friends who took him to the clinic and witnessed the
incident have all taken to their heels,” another source said.
At
Obawole Street and the environs, residents live in fear of the unknown.
“Cult activities here are part of the life. Daily, young men are
pitching their tents with either cult groups. Their meeting places are
known to everyone here, but there is nothing they can do. If you go to
Last Bus Stop, you will see them gathering there. That is why I said if
the police want to get Aliha, they know what to do,” a resident said.
The
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Samuel Jinadu, said, “The
matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation
Department, Panti, for investigation.”
