ShareThe House of Representatives will tomorrow launch an investigation into the circumstances leading to the poor performance of the Super Eagles at the ongoing FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Deputy Chairman House Committee on Sports Rep. Gbenga Elegbeleye (PDP, Ondo) who disclosed this to Trustsports yesterday said that his committee has also summoned Minister of Sports Alhaji Isa Bio and the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi to appear before it tomorrow to defend the expenditure of N900million budgeted for Super Eagles’ participation in the ongoing 2010 World Cup competition in South Africa.
According to him, the committee would equally be interested in finding out the reason for the dismal showing of the Super Eagles at the group stage, where the country lost two matches and drew one to crash out of the quadrennial global soccer show.
The lawmaker said the House would want to know how much of the money would be refunded into government coffers since the Super Eagles could not go beyond the group stage.
He maintained that, the N900million was actually released to the National Sports Commission to settle players’ allowances as they progress in the tournament and since they could not go far, the balance of the fund must be returned insisting that, the Commission must account for all expenses made at the mundial, just as he warned that the House would neither condone any frivolity nor accept excuses for the poor performance of the players.
