ShareEverton forward Victor Anichebe said he was
disappointed following his exclusion from the Super Eagles that
featured at the World Cup, despite impressing in a warm-up game shortly
before it began.
Nigeria did not progress beyond the
group stage at the World Cup and the country‘s government reacted by
withdrawing the football team from international competitions for two
years - a decision which was later reversed after FIFA intervened.
Anichebe,
who finished the domestic campaign with Everton strongly before linking
up with the Eagles, hopes the episode will lead to the opening of a new
chapter for Nigerian football.
He told evertontv, ”It was
really disappointing for me not to go considering after the first
warm-up game (against Saudi Arabia) I thought I had a good chance of a
place and I had been man of the match in the game.
”I‘m
not going to talk too much about that because the manager (Lars
Lagerback) made his decision. I was happy for the lads who went to the
World Cup but things didn‘t really pan out for them as they would have
wanted them to happen.”
