Sacking Lulu won’t solve problem – Charles Bassey

ShareEx-international Charles Bassey has said the
impeachment of Sani Lulu and two others from the Nigeria Football
Federation is not enough to correct the anomalies in Nigerian football.
Lulu was on July 4 sent packing from the NFF along with Amanze Uchegbulam and Taiwo Ogunjobi
And
the NFF Congress on Friday ratified their impeachment. Bassey, a 1980
Nations Cup winner, said the problem with Nigerian football was with
the system and not the individuals.
”When we talk about
restructuring, we mean the whole system must change,” the Akwa United
Chairman told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday.
”It
is good some people have been removed as a punishment for their poor
administration but what is the guarantee that those coming to replace
them will do better. If we don‘t lay out a good plan, whoever comes in
will also take advantage of the weak structure and further ruin the
game. And at that time, it will be too late to remove such people
because FIFA will be watching.
”What we need to do is to
adhere to the plans of total football development whereby various
programmes run concurrently in different parts of the country with the
sole purpose of getting the best talents for our teams. These
programmes should be managed by ex-internationals or coaches.”
Bassey
commended the Federal Government for its decision to reverse the two
years ban on the national team from international competitions.
He added that the new NFF leadership would be conscious of the mistakes of its predecessors.
He
said, ”Nobody will be happy if Nigeria does not take part in
competitions so we are happy the government has reversed the ban. But
we should learn from it by laying more emphasis on the domestic league.
We should endeavour to build the Super Eagles around the home-based
players.”
