ShareOgun State Commissioner for Sports and Youth
Development, Bukola Olopade, has said the solution to the problems of
Nigerian football lies in passionate leadership in the Nigeria Football
Federation.
Nigeria has experienced a decline in
international football in recent years and Olopade, who described the
Super Eagles’ ouster at the World Cup as a catastrophe, told our
correspondent on the telephone on Wednesday that the team could regain
their lost glory through early preparations.
He said,
”The Eagles have their problems at the World Cup but what is
responsible for most of the problems is leadership of our football. It
affected not only the Eagles but every part of our football development.
”If
we must get things right before the major competitions, the teams must
begin early preparations and people with good track records and passion
for the sport should be allowed to administer football in Nigeria.”
He
lamented the state of the domestic league, noting that the league had
suffered neglect and the home-based players had not been given enough
opportunity to feature in the national teams.
Olopade
on Wednesday got the backing of the Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel
to stand for the NFF presidential election which comes up in August.
The
governor, who spoke at a sports stakeholders‘ meeting in Abeokuta said
Olopade had proved himself as a reliable administrator whose leadership
at the NFF would improve the fortune of Nigerian football.
