Crown coach Godfrey Esu and ex-international
Friday Ekpo have commended acting Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen
for excluding some of the players that featured at the World Cup from
the friendly game against South Korea on August 11.
In the
35-man list released on Wednesday for camping ahead of the match
notable names like Nwankwo Kanu, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Joseph Yobo were
not listed.
Esu told our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that the decision to invite the home-based players was right.
He
said, ”We have been expecting a change like this for a long time it is a
balanced list as regards the number of home-based players invited for
the camping.
”I‘m not surprised to see Kanu and Yobo out
of the team. They‘ve had their time and I believe there should be
progress in the team.
“I would have wanted the coach to
include Aiyegbeni because he still has a role to play in the team. I
don‘t think his World Cup error is enough to exclude him from the list.”
Ekpo said making an early decision on the team selection would help the coach work well with the players.
”Eguavoen‘s
decision is a bold one because very few coaches have confidence in the
home-based players,” the former Akwa United assistant coach told our
correspondent on the telephone on Thursday.
”I‘m happy he
selected the players that aplayed well at the World Cup. He could not
have dumped all the players because we still need the experienced ones
in the team.
The Nigeria Football Federation should support him in preparing the team.”
