S’Korea clash: Eguavoen tasks home-based players
Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:33
Acting Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has
urged the home-based players to take advantage of the friendly game
against South Korea to stake claims to places in the team
Eguavoen last week included 22 domestic league players in his 35-man
squad for camping ahead of the encounter scheduled for Seoul, South
Korea, on August 11.
Speaking with our correspondent on
the telephone on Saturday, the Tunisia‘94 Nations Cup winner and member
of the history-making squad that represented Nigeria in their first ever
World Cup appearance – at USA‘94 – insisted the home boys needed such
a match to stand up and be counted.
”The home-based players should be ready to take a step forward in their careers,” the former Nigeria captain said.
”We have many good players in the domestic league but they have to fight their way into the Super Eagles.
”The
game in Seoul is a chance for them to make a strong statement. No
player gets a national jersey without working for it. They have to
challenge the foreign-based players invited for roles in the encounter.
”We have seen home-based players picked ahead of foreign-based players for tournaments in the past. It can happen this time.”
Eguavoen,
who apologised for the country‘s poor performance at the 2010 World
Cup in South Africa, pleaded with corporate bodies in the country to
invest in the domestic league.
“With a good league we can do what Ghana did at the World Cup,” he said.
