Serie A players in strike threat

SharePlayers in Italy could go on strike for the Serie A opener on August 29 due to a row over the upcoming Christmas break.
The
players‘ trade union, AIC, is demanding that the winter break starts on
December 20, and not the current date of December 22.
AIC insist this does not give foreign players in particular enough time to return to their families for Christmas.
The
break is set to end on January 5, and the union also wants this
extended to January 9 due to ‘Kings Day‘ - celebrated in Spanish
countries - and Orthodox Christmas, which fall on January 6 and 7
respectively.
”Many of our foreign colleagues have to
travel abroad, spending the vacation thousands of kilometres away from
Italy,” Internazionale‘s former Italy defender Marco Materazzi told
Corriere della Sera.
”These players should be given more time off.”
In
addition to the vacation row, a contract dispute is in full swing over
attempts to control the flexibility of contracts nearing expiry, and to
introduce clauses that allow heavy fines for private indiscretions, such
as unauthorised nights out.
