The Falconets arrived home to a rousing welcome
on Monday after their heroic performance at the FIFA U-20 Women‘s World
Cup in Germany.
The team made history as the first African
side to reach the final of the cadet women’s tournament where they
lost 2-0 to hosts Germany on Sunday.
The team arrived at
the Murtala Muhammed Airport aboard a KLM airline by 7.35pm. They came
out of the arrival lounge at 9.10pm and left the airport at 9.20pm in
three vehicles – a government vehicle and two commercial buses.
The team are expected to be the guests of the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Members of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club arrived at the airport as early as 5pm to receive the team.
It
was the fourth time the Falconets would feature at the event, failing
to progress beyond the group stage once since the tournament was
introduced in 2002.
The Falconets conceded six goals and scored six in the six matches they played at the tournament in Germany.
Out
of the 104 shots taken by the players, 50 were on goals. Helen Ukaonu‘s
goal against the USA in the quarterfinals was rated as one of the best
of the tournament.
No Nigerian player won any individual award but their performance is seen as the best ever to come out of Africa.
